THE VICE – CHANCELLOR

PROFESSOR N.M BHEBE

BA (UBLS) PhD (London)

 

Professor Ngwabi Mulunge Bhebe is a distinguished scholar who obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Geography from the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS) in 1967. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Imperial History from the University of London in 1972.
 A celebrated historian par excellence, Professor Bhebe’s academic employment dates back to 1974 when he lectured in history at Faurah Bay College in Sierra Leone, and later at the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS) as well as at the University of Zimbabwe from 1982. He served as Professor of History at the University of Zimbabwe from 1988 to 1999, and also as external examiner at the universities of Botswana, Malawi and Zambia. Professor Bhebe is a researcher of no mean accomplishments. He has published extensively and has to his name several books as well as articles in internationally refereed journals. In this area, he has received numerous academic honours and awards. He has also presented papers at international conferences.
 
With regards to administrative experiences, Professor Bhebe is a seasoned university administrator who has gone through the mill, serving as Chairperson of the University of Zimbabwe’s History Department from 1989 to 1992, as well as of the Research Board from 1984 to 1991. He also served as Senior Proctor and ultimately Pro Vice Chancellor of the same university from 1992 to 1995. In 1999, Professor Bhebe was appointed as founder Vice Chancellor of Midlands State University, an institution, which has risen to dizzy heights under his ingenious leadership. Professor Bhebe has made a sterling contribution to the development of higher education both nationally and internationally. He also has a remarkable track record in community service.
 

Beyond Midlands State University, Professor Bhebe’s academic credentials, vision and leadership have been noticed and recognized as evidenced by the fact that currently, he serves as:

  • Zimbabwe representative on the UNESCO Executive Board
  • Council Member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)
  • Alternate Members of the Governing Board of the Association of African Universities (AAU)
  • Founding and Executive Member of the Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA)
  • Board Member of the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE), and Chairperson of the Council’s Funding and Finance Committee
  • Board Members of ZISCOSTEEL Pvt Ltd Zimbabwe, Chairperson of the Human Resource Management Committee and Member of the Finance Committee.
  • Country Researcher, and Member of the Management Board of the Hashim Mbita SADC Liberation Struggle Project,
  • Non Executive Director of Ngwabi Enterprises.
  • Founding Member and second Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Universities Vice Chancellor Association (ZUVCA)
   

Pro-Vice Chancellor
Professor R J Zvobgo

Professor Rungano Zvobgo was educated at the Universities of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru in India. He is a holder of the Doctor of Philosophy in Education he obtained from the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom.

Professor Zvobgo has a long work experience in teacher education that dates back to 1981 when he joined Gweru Teachers College as lecturer in the Education department. His career as an administrator in the teacher education sector began in 1982 when he was appointed Vice-Principal of Mkoba Teachers College. Professor Zvobgo was later reposted to Masvingo Teachers College and later to Mutare (Secondary) Teachers College where he served as College Principal for over ten years. He finally moved back to the Midlands Province in 1996 to become Principal for Gweru Teachers College. Between 1998 and 1999 he served as Founder Principal of the Gweru Teachers College – University of Zimbabwe Degree Programme. At the establishment of Midlands State University in 1999 Professor Zvobgo was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, a post he holds to date.

Professor Zvobgo sits on a number of Boards and Councils which include the Mutare Provincial Hospital Board of Governors; the Zimbabwe Academic Publishing Association Board of Directors; and the Bindura University of Science Education Council. Professor Zvobgo is an author mainly of educational literature. One of his book publications made news headlines in year 2000 when it scooped the second prize of the Zimbabwe Book Publishing Association Award for the non-fiction category of books. Apart from book publications he has authored a number of academic articles and papers since 1983.

Professor Zvobgo is married and has six children.

   

The Registrar
Mr Erasmus Mupfiga

Mr Erasmus Mupfiga studied at the University of Zimbabwe and the University of Manchester where he graduated with the Bachelor of Science Honours in Sociology and the Master of Science in Human Resource Management, respectively. Mr Mupfiga's work experience began in 1990 in the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs where he served as Senior Administrative Officer. He later on joined the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare occupying the post of Deputy Director (Under Secretary). In July 2000 he joined Midlands State University to take up a lectureship in the department of Human Resource Management in the faculty of Social Sciences. During this period he was also appointed Senior Proctor of the University (i.e. from January 2002 to June 2004). In June 2004 he was appointed Deputy Registrar, a position he held until the end of 2008 when he became Acting Registrar. On 1 March 2009 Mr Mupfiga was appointed Registrar of Midlands State University.

   

The Bursar
Mr Partson Kutyauripo

Mr Partson Kutyauripo is a holder of the Master of Commerce degree in Accounting. He is a Chartered Certified Accountant and also holds the Diploma in Advanced Internal Auditing and Computorised Forensic Auditing. He is a Registered Public Accountant of Zimbabwe (RPAccZ); a member of the Zimbabwe Institute of Management (MZIM); and also a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Mr Kutyauripo's work experience stretches way back to 1985 when he joined H M Accounting Services (Pvt) Ltd as a Trainee Accountant. Thereafter, he served in the Accounts Departments of various institutions in the Ministries of Education Sports and Culture; and Higher and Tertiary Education. He joined Midlands State University in 2003 as Senior Accounting Assistant – Management Accounting rising through the ranks of Chief Accounting Assistant; Assistant Bursar – Non Current Assets and Investments; and Deputy Bursar - Accounting and Finance. He was appointed the University's Acting Bursar at the beginning of 2008 and became substantive Bursar in May 2008.

Mr Kutyauripo is a member of Gerson Lehman Group Accounting Council covering North America, Europe and Asia being responsible for advising JERS and GAAP. On the academic side he is a part-time lecturer at the Midlands State University's Graduate School of Business Leadership and he lectures in Financial Management.

 

   

The Librarian

Mrs Nyarai Macheka is the Librarian of the Midlands State University.
She is a holder of the Higher National Diploma in Library and Information Science obtained from Harare Polytechnic; the Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies; and the Master of Science in Library and Information Science of the National University of Science and Technology.

Mrs Nyarai Macheka’s work experience was wholly spent at Midlands State University. She joined the University in 2000 at the grade of Senior Library Assistant and rose through the ranks of Senior Assistant Librarian, Sub Librarian, Deputy Librarian and Acting Librarian before she became the University Librarian on 24 April 2009.

Mrs Macheka is a past president of the Rotary Club of Gweru and is still a member of the Club.
