Campus Sport

Preamble

The department of Sports and Culture falls under the division of student affairs. It was established to cater for the sporting and cultural needs of the students and staff at the Midlands State University. Sporting and recreation provide for the overall development of both students and staff. This is realized through encouraging students in particular, to engage in various forms of physical activities  which enhance  the effective functioning of the body systems. In turn, these improve intellectual capabilities.

Vision

To create an environment which targets mass participation by our students and members of staff in both active and passive sport. Everyone is expected to participate regularly in at least one active or passive  sport

Aims

Encourage our students to desist from sedentary living

Promote wellness, communication, confidence, teamwork and assertiveness .All these are necessary ingredients for a healthy productive institution.

Strategies towards meeting the vision goal

All student at registration are required to register with the existing sports clubs. These include among others, soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, table tennis, darts, chess, rugby, cricket, swimming, athletics, hockey etc.

Students  are free to establish new sporting clubs if their interests are not met by the above disciplines. Formulation and registration of these new clubs should be done through the Students Representative Council (SRC).

Where financial resources permit, the department hires qualified coaches to help in the production of quality players for the major competitions.

Various tournaments are organized every semester to enable students to display their individual and/or team skills to both the university and outside university communities. Some of these tournaments are

  •  Inter-hall residence competitions.
  •  Inter-faculty competitions.
  • Wejila-jena tournament which is held in October each year
