Former Dynamos and Zimbabwe Warriors striker Evans Gwekwerere reminded soccer lovers that he is back from the doldrums that had reduced him to a nonentity in football circles, after recently inspiring South African side Jomo Cosmos to victory, Varsity Voice can reveal.

The forgotten striker, Gwekwerere took the Zimbabwean football landscape by storm in the beginning of the 2006 soccer season before he was snapped by Moroka Swallows. However, the young striker failed to live up to expectations and had to be offloaded by the Premiership side only to join JomoCosmos in the unfashionable division one better known as the Mvela Golden league.

It was however, this Monday when the Mbare born and bred Gwekwerere rose to the occasion when his side was involved in play-offs with Carara Kicks football club to grab a brace that won Cosmos a ticket back in to the premiership. Carara had stolen the lead in the first half and when they thought they had sealed victory, Gwekwerere then appeared on the scene and punished them, scoring two goals in the last five minutes of the match to end the match on a 2-1 score line infavour of Jomo Cosmos.

The fans and club owner Jomo Sono saluted the forgotten striker after the match, “It’s really good to be back in the premiership once again. However, credit must go to Gwekwerere as he rose to the occasion and silenced his critics. We pray he will continue to shine,” said Sono who also doubles as the club coach.

On another note, former Warriors goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro was voted Bidvest player of the year for the 20008/2009 soccer season. The Gokwe born and bred big goalie basked in glory after putting a splendid performance in the country’s elite football league.
