Fate dealt a cruel hand on four Senga commuters who narrowly escaped death by a whisker after jumping off a moving lorry in a bid to avoid getting involved in a vehicle accident which was later prevented, it has been learnt.
24 year old Peter Kaseke, 18 year old Steven Kapini, Stella Melford (32) and Brian Badza (45), yesterday night sustained serious injuries after they all jumped off a moving lorry near the Gweru-Shurugwi roundabout in an attempt to save their lives. This occured when the victims realised that the vehicle they were in was about to be involved in a head-on collision with a haulage truck. The four were rushed to Gweru General Hospital for treatment. Kaseke, Kapini and Melford sustained serious head and neck injuries and are currently awaiting surgery while Badza only got away with a broken arm. The driver of the lorry from which the four victims jumped Mr Leonard Marange said at around 10 pm he was on the Gweru-Shurugwi roundabout headed for Senga High Density suburb when a haulage truck coming from the opposite direction began swerving into Marange's lane. "At around 10 pm, I was driving home to Senga with four passengers at the back of my truck when an oncoming haulage truck began swerving into my lane. On seeing the swerving truck, the four jumped out of the truck in an attempt to escape what they saw as impending death", he said. Police arrived at the scene along with an ambulance of paramedics. Police have warned members of the public against taking impulsive and perilous action such as jumping out of moving vehicles, breaking wind screens to escape or any other action that can cause distraction of the driver. |
